NHRA AT WWT RACEWAY ELIMINATION ROUND UPDATES

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock), Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcyle) win at the Midwest Nationals held at World Wide Raceway.

Once again large crowds are on hand to watch the NHRA final eliminations at World Wide Technology Raceway.

Round 4 Finals

Top Fuel

Schumacher wins his second Wally this season and 88th of his career.

Torrence had the starting line advantage and the lead until Schumacher chased him down in the lights. Tony Schumacher’s MOV: 0.0107 seconds (approximately 5 feet).

Funny Car

Ron Capps was 40 – 23 against Jack Beckman in prior events and Capps is 5 – 4 against Beckman in prior final rounds. But now they are tied in final wins as Beckman driving John Force’s car as he recovers from early season race incident.

Capps had the starting line advantage, but Beckman had the lead as they went by the Christmas tree and never trailed from there on for the win.  Beckman wins his 34th Funny Car Wally.

Four years ago Beckman lost his ride and not raced until he was asked by the John Force. The win is the first since he came back this year.

“It feels great to be back,” said Beckman. “We are going to savor this one.”

The point won go to John Force who is currently in third place for the season championship

Pro Stock

Dallas Glenn won with a great light and never trailed for the win. He wins fifth Wally this season and 13th of his career.

“I really want this one,” said Glenn. “We have got in final rounds 3 times and we came up short. And we kept our points lead, Yes.”

Pro Stock Motorcycle

Gaige Herrera wins Pro Stock Motorcycle and took the season points lead.

Herrera has 19 final wins out of 21 times in race finals.

“Its all about consistency, we had a awesome bike all weekend,” said Herrera “Credit goes to guys back in the shop. We just show off all their hard work.”

Herrera is 7 – 1 against Van Sant in prior events and each has won 1 times against the other in final rounds. Van Sant with the starting line advantage, but Herrera with the lead by 330 feet and never trailed from there on for the win.

Funny Car

It was an all John Force Team semi final between Austin Proc and Jack Beckman racing for John Force who is recovering from injuries.

“They owe us,” said Jack Beckman looking at the Austin Proc after the race. We just want to win this race for John [Force]”

Top Fuel

The highlight match of the round was between Tony Schumacher and point leader Anton Brown. It was a tight race but Brown had trouble near the finish line and parachute came out early allowing Schumacher to win.

“Really close drag race, that’s racing,” said Brown. Tony was great on the tree and tough loss”

Commenting on his parachute coming out early he said the car safety system sensed a problem.

“I rather be safe that sorry,” said Brown.

Several other top drivers beside Brown in Top Fuel exited early giving Justin Ashley a potential opening to move up the standing but Ashley did not want to even thing about it.

“Best way is not to look at the points,” said Ashley. “We had a good old fashioned drag race. I have lot respect for Shawn Langton”

Prock is 2 – 0 against Beckman in prior events. Beckman with the starting line advantage and never trailed for the win. he is advancing to his second final this season and 71st final of his career.

Capps is 10 – 3 against Alexander in prior events. Capps with the starting line advantage and never trailed for win. He will have lane choice in the final over Beckman. Capps is advancing to his fourth final round this season and 151st career final. Alexander is up in smoke right at the hit and clicked it off

Points leader Matt Smith was upset by Geneo Scali who returned to racing Pro Bike Motorcycles after a 15 year break from NHRA. The last time he was in a semi-final was in 2007.

Top Fuel

T.J. Zizzo top qualifier continued his great weekend by winning his first round with a 3.718 at 330.88 mph as continues his quest to win an event championship.

“I will tell you we have a lot of support,” said Zizzo. “My dad has been trying for 44 years to win a ‘Wally.'”

One of the closest race of the round was between NASCAR Champion / NHRA Top Fuel rookie Tony Stewart and Shawn Reed. The was between decided by one ten thousand of second as Reed edged out Stewart with a holeshot.

“I grew up watching Steward,” said a happy Stewart. “Now I am 1-0 against him. “I love the guy [Stewart] and he is a great ambassador for our sport. We got on the wheel and we had to do something.”

Funny Car

Austin Prock set a World Wide Technology Raceway track record with at ET 3.814 at 330.96 mph.

“I knew it was fast and was fighting it from going left,” said Prock. “the team has given us a feisty fast car. Feels like a spaceship.”

Bob Bodde ran a 3.995 at 322.50 mph…he tunes his car.

“I was trying not screw it up,” said Bodde. ” We got the win light and hope we can keep it going today.”

Erica Enders continued her march with low ET of the day with an ET of 6.552 at 208.39 mph. Yesterday after her last run Enders was not as happy with her car.

“We got everything sorted out,” said Enders. “Being in third [season points] we need all the help and all we can do.”
