Schriner Dedicates Street Stocks Win to Hasson

The No. 44 took its final laps around the Quad City Speedway on Sunday in a ceremony memorializing the late Dwaine Hasson that was held before the evening’s racing got underway in earnest.

A moment of silence was held to honor Hasson and the show commenced. And it was an eventful night of racing, complete with a feel-good moment in the street stocks, Hasson’s former class, that topped it all.

Rock Island’s Rick Schriner won the feature event in a photo finish with Jarrett Franzen. Schriner was close to Hasson. He, as many other driver’s did, sported a No. 44 sticker on his ride.

“We made all of the plans to go up and win that one,” Schriner said. “That one was for Dwaine all together. We were trying our (rear ends) off to get that win.”

Schriner took advantage of Chris Lawrence’s misfortune on lap 9. Lawrence’s 8L car spun off turn four while leading to send Schriner to the front. Schriner led the rest of way but was challenged late. Schriner got a nose in front of Franzen coming to the checkered to win in a photo finish.

Nate Beuseling thought the night was lost after the transmission in his 46 machine broke in the hot laps. In an ultimate show of sportsmanship, Roberts Motorsports and Ray Guss Jr. elected to let Beuseling get behind the wheel of the No. 58 that formerly was driven by the late Hershel Roberts.

“These guys are gracious enough to not be worried about points,” Beuseling said. “I got out of the car and they said, ‘All right you’re getting in this one.’ It’s a dream to drive that car because of Hershel.”

With the 46 taped over the 58, Beuseling went on to win the 25-lap IMCA Late Model feature event. Mike Zemo Jr., who led most of the race, surrendered a huge lead after cutting a tire on lap 6.

“As much as I love Ray and the team, that was absolutely awesome,” Beuseling said. “To be able to jump in that car and do that.”

Doug Crampton took home the trophy in the IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature. It was a race that ended under caution after nine yellow flags. Crampton took his first lead on lap 17, just two laps before the race ended.

Collin Thirlby became a first-time winner at QCS, taking the checkered in the UMP Modifieds. He and his 47 machine made the trip from Traverse City, Mich., to win the 20-lapper. It was a race that consisted of four cautions, all in the opening six laps.

There were two features for the 4-cylinders on Sunday, one being a makeup from last week’s time constraints.

Two cut tires on the final lap made for an exciting finish in the 4-cylinders second feature event. Cameron Poci took home the checkered after Aaron Hitt took the white flag in first. Hitt cut a tire in turn 1, surrendering the lead to Josh Sharpe. Sharpe cut his tire and lost the lead going into turn 3 to give Poci the win.

A.J. Rock, No. 75, was involved in a violent wreck in turn 3 in the opening heat race. The car was torn to pieces after rolling three-times. He walked away uninjured.

Zach Dahl won the make-up feature to open the night.

Figure 8 racing made another appearance at QCS on Sunday but in another small dose. Five cars raced on Sunday with Terry Mattly winning once again. Jeremy and Jake Gustaf lost engines and settled for four and fifth, respectively.
