The American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports made its debut at the all-new Arrowhead Speedway in Colcord, Okla., on Friday, and a first-time series winner emerged when Chad Wheeler won the race to the finish line.

Wheeler, who has two previous wins at the Arrowhead Speedway in this inaugural season, kept his record perfect at the high-banked 1/3-mile clay oval and took home $2,000 for his efforts.

Early on, Tyler Wolff was in charge as he set a torrid pace until the race’s first and only caution occurred on lap 14 when third-starting ‘Big Daddy’ Joe Duvall came to a stop on the racing surface. After the restart, Wheeler disposed of four-time USMTS national champion Jason Hughes while Wolff quickly found the back of the pack, allowing Wheeler to close in.

With Wolff hugging the low line, Wheeler danced dangerously close to the outside concrete wall and eventually pulled alongside of Wolff as the duo navigated lapped traffic.

Wheeler was scored the leader of the race with eight laps to go and the 39-year-old from Muskogee, Okla., led the rest of the way to become the fifth different winner in nine ARMS clashes this season.

“I was already past my limit,” Wheeler declared in reference to his abbreviated racing season. “I went back to the wife and said ‘Babe, we got ourselves hot rod’ and I was like let me keep racing a little bit… What a special night. It’s so cool that we have this race track in our backyard.

“I need to get on a treadmill, I’m hurting. That was up on the wheel and Tyler’s normally the one railing on the top and I’m the one running in the middle to bottom.”

Wolff eventually joined Wheeler on the high side but had to settle for the runner-up paycheck while Hughes, whose Hughes Racing Chassis shop is just minutes from the former West Siloam Speedway, finished third.

Eighth-starting Kale Westover crossed the finish line in fourth with Jared Russell fifth. Duvall rebounded to claim the sixth spot and moved into the series points lead with that effort.

Gary Christian bested 15th-starting Trevor Hughes for seventh, Terry Phillips nabbed the ninth position and Jake Davis came from 20th on the starting grid to round out the top 10 at the checkered flag.

Mike Hansen, who started 25th and found his way to an 11th-place finish, earned a $100 bonus and the Dickson Transport Hard Charger Award.

In addition to USRA Modifieds, Friday’s program also featured three divisions competing for Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points.

David Whittle claimed the checkers in the Medieval USRA Stock Car main event, J.C. Morton topped the USRA B-Mods and Ricky Foster was first in the USRA Tuners.

The second $2,000-to-win clash of the weekend takes place at the Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Okla., on Saturday, June 24, with USRA B-Mods and Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks joining the American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports.

The pits open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 6, hot laps are at 7:30 and racing gets underway at 8.

The Tri-State Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located 1.6 miles west of the Arkansas-Oklahoma State line on US 271, then 0.3 mile north to 1705 Race Track Rd, Pocola, OK 74902.

For more information visit Tri-StateSpeedway.com or the track’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube profiles.

If you can’t be there in person, stream both events live on RaceonTexas.com or RacinDirt.TV.
