2013 TCS Gold Crown Front of shirtPONTOON BEACH, Ill. (Oct. 5, 2013)—Rain has forced the postponement to Sunday (Oct. 6) of the $10,000-to-win final round of the fifth annual DuPont Gold Crown Midget Nationals at Tri-City Speedway. The event co-sanctioned by the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the Honda National Dirt Midget Series, originally scheduled for Saturday, will resume with hot laps at 5:30 p.m.

Rico Abreu of Rutherford, Calif., won Thursday’s feature with Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Ind., second. Clauson finished first and Abreu second in Friday’s feature. They are locked into Sunday’s 40-lap feature on the three-eighths mile track based upon points scored in the opening two rounds of the Gold Crown. Six more drivers are also assured of feature top-eight starting positions: Zach Daum, Chris Bell, Darren Hagen, Shane Cottle, Caleb Armstrong and Alex Bright. They’ll race in a dash to determine their grid spots.

The event has one of the top fields in midget racing in the United States this year.

“It’s like the Chili Bowl,” driver Jonathan Beason of Broken Arrow, Okla., said, referring to the indoor event with 250-plus entries held annually in January in Tulsa. Among the drivers who will have to race their way into the feature are Brad Kuhn, Tracy Hines, Jerry Coons Jr., Andrew Felker, Dave Darland, Danny Stratton, Brady Bacon and Bobby East.

The POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series will also race Sunday. It’s the final event of the season for POWRi’s Midgets, who crowned Daum champion on Friday, and Micros, where Nathan Benson of Concordia, Mo., has clinched the title.
