Just a couple of weeks from now some of the nation’s best sprint car teams and drivers take the stage at the Southern Iowa Speedway located in Oskaloosa. Several changes have been made to the venues by promoter Terry McCarl.
For the past 17 years the Monday night show at Oskaloosa has featured 410 winged sprint cars and this year the sprints will still have the wings but the engines will be 360’s. The race will be an ASCS Lucas Oil National event sponsored by Musco Lighting. With the 360 Nationals wrapping up Saturday night this event should attract a star studded field. NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart will be on hand joining past former Knoxville National Champion Tim Shaffer to headline the show. Fan favorite Brian Brown will be on hand as well as the ASCS regulars which include Johnny Herrera, Jason Johnson, Jeff Swindell, Brad Loyet, and Tony Bruce to name a few. I am sure there will be a few other surprise entries before the event happens I would not be surprised to see “Young Money” (Kyle Larson) in the house to tackle the half mile.
Promoter McCarl told me one of the reasons for the change, the 410 car count which was never high was starting to dwindle a bit, the event just needed some flavor. I asked him if the Sunday race at Knoxville had anything to do with it and he didn’t lie and told me yes having one more 410 race before the Nationals makes guys a little leary, everyone wants to have fresh stuff for the Nationals! The race will stay pay the winner $30,000 if they win it from the tail, nothing has changed there. He is very excited about the race, he mentioned the race will pay back better and a guy won’t have to come from the back and win it to make some extra dollars, depending on where a guy finishes by starting in the back there will be some incentives. The car count should exceed the 40 mark and the cars will be fun to watch on the flat ½ mile. Several drivers competing Monday will be their first visit to OSKY !
Tuesday will be the only non-wing sprint car race in the Iowa during Iowa Speedweek. It will be the 12th Annual Ultimate Challenge sanctioned by United States Auto Club. The event is sponsored by Casey’s General Stores and I understand there will be a lot of dough on hand, as in pizza dough besides the winner taking home $10,000. This is one of the best paying non-wing shows in the country and will feature the best open wheel non-wing drivers in the country such as point leader Dave Darland, Bryan Clauson, Kevin Thomas, Brady Bacon, Tracy Hines, and the young talented Christopher Bell.
There will be over $10,000 in prizes given away to the fans and drivers at each event. There will be a TV giveaway each night and more beads will be handed out than ever as well as the party in the infield each night.
You can contact the Front Row Challenge office for tickets and additional information at 515-957-0020.
I hope to see everyone there for an exciting two days of racing at OSKY !!!
