As the second full year of operation is taking shape for Mid-America Lightning Sprints Presented by Jayhawk Millwright it is time to reflect on the successful inaugural 2013 season. In 2013 MALS paid $14,815 in cash out in five races, making this the richest paying lightning sprint races in the nation.
Mid-America Lightning Sprints had great sponsors that helped make this inaugural year a success. First and for most a special thanks to our title sponsor Jayhawk Millwright for whom none of this would be possible. Our associate sponsors also helped out tremendously, Liquid and Powder Coat Finishes of Kansas City, Kent Transportation, Mid-West Speed shop and Speedway Motors. With these great sponsor MALS was able to attract some of the best racers in the country from as far away as the State of New York, Colorado, Indiana, Wisconsin and all of our surrounding states. Our series supported some of the biggest open wheel shows in central Missouri. One was at Double-X speedway where MALS supported the Jesse Hockett tribute race in which Phil Heavelow picked up one of his three wins. At L.A. Raceway we supported a large 360 winged sprint car show. And at our final race of the year which paid $1000 to win we supported MOWA 410 sprint cars at Montgomery Motorsports Park in New Florence MO. Which was won by our friend from New York who some would say is one of the best lightning sprint racer in the county, Don Harvey. All the racers did a great job supporting our new series and we are expecting great things this year.
In the off season Mid-America Lightning sprints was busy organizing the first National Lightning Sprint car meeting. In attendance were representatives from Mid-America Lighting Sprints, Illinois Lightning Sprint Series, Midwest Mini Sprint Association, Wisconsin Mini Sprint Association, Rocky Mountain Lighting Sprint Association and several representatives from tracks in Indiana that run Lightning sprints on a weekly basis. From this meeting a national set of rules were drawn up that all parties agreed to for consideration and possible future acceptance either this year or for the 2015 season. It was also agreed that all that attended would try and work together to help cross promote lightning sprints. Mid-America Lightning Sprints Presented by Jayhawk Millwright believes this is the future of our sport, to help control cost and have a common set of rules that all racers can benefit from. Mid-America Lightning Sprints has taken this felicity to heart for 2014 by booked several combined shows with other central United States Lightning Sprint organizations.
For the 2014 racing season Mid-America Lightning Sprints is please to have back as our title sponsor Jayhawk Millwright. Also several associated sponsor are returning such as Midwest Speedshop, Liquid and Powder Coat fishishes of Kansas City and new sponsors Speedway Specialties, Jack 93 FM and KWRT 1370. This season MALS has expanded the number of shows and the places we are racing at. Our season starts off at L.A. raceway in La Monte MO as it did last year on April 26th in which we will be supporting the Original Winged Outlaw Warriors 360 and 305 sprint cars. This show will pay $650 to win and $70 to start. On May 25th we are honored to be the support class for a race that celebrates the life of Missouri’s favorite sprint car driver Jesse Hockett held at Double-X speedway in California MO. We will be supporting the ASCS 360 winged Sprint cars. This show will also pay $650 to win and $70 to start. One of the highlight for this year will be at a great venue for our drivers this season. Held on July 4th and 5th at Dodge City Raceway Park we will be racing a double header combined show with the Rocky Mountain Lightning Sprint Association and Midwest Lightning Sprints. Thanks to our Title Sponsor Jayahawk Millwright and the hard work RMLSA have put into this show it is one of three races for MALS that will pay $1000 to win. The Dodge City race will pay $1000 each night. The third show for MALS to pay $1000 to win is one of three shows that are combined with MMSA out of Indiana. This show is at Montgomery Motorsports Park in New Florence MO on Sept. 20th. For the July 4th and 5th race we are very excited to be opening for the GREATEST SHOW ON DIRT, the FVP World of Outlaw Sprint cars. Mid-America Lightning Sprints Presented by Jayhawk Millwright has thirteen races planned this season. Our racers will be competing for an unprecedented $30,000 in cash for 2014. But we also have planned several autograph sessions and our very popular kid’s bike night give away. The Kids bike night give away is something our drivers like to do to show our support to the people who are our future racers and support us. Our winged lightning sprint car show will cover Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Indiana this season.
