The Lucas Cattle Company quietly kicked off its eighth season last weekend with one points-earning event; however, a pair of events awaits drivers and fans this weekend with outings scheduled at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri Friday and the season opener at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri Saturday.

Just six drivers took to the track for last weekend’s first race of the year at Callaway Raceway but the low car count didn’t’ slow down the drivers on hand for a qualifying heat race and main event. Jon Binning of Warrensburg claimed the heat race with 2010 ULMA Champion Vance Wilson close behind and it was these two drivers that led the way for the main event.

The lead drivers raced hard to maintain their front-running positions with Wilson eventually moving to the front of the field only to drift too high in turns three and four, leaving the race surface, which brought out the caution and ultimately caused him to restart the race at the tail of the field.

With Wilson tail back, Binning set sail and appeared to be on his way to his first win of the season but Wilson was not about to give up as he maneuvered his way back to the runner-up position in a matter of a few laps. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Binning at the time, his right-front tire developed a slow leak and was costing him precious time on the field with Wilson quickly closing the gap.

Near the conclusion of the race, Wilson made a high-side pass on Binning as the pair touched exiting turn two. In the final corners Wilson once again used the narrow cushion and this time made it stick as he came to the line just in front of Binning to claim the win. It was Wilson’s 25th career ULMA win.

Action resumes at Callaway Raceway again this Friday. Visit the raceway online at their all-new website, which is located at www.callawayraceways.com. W.A.R. Sprint Cars run with the regular weekly classes this Friday. Gates open at 5, hot laps begin at 7 and racing starts at 7:30.

Lucas Oil Speedway is set to kick off its weekly championship racing this Saturday, April 19 in a big way. According to the track’s latest press release, the ULMA Late Models will run in a special 25-lap $1,000-to win main event courtesy of ALPS Food Store in Pittsburg, Missouri, and will be the featured class of the evening.

Gates at Lucas Oil Speedway will open at 5:00 p.m., hot laps roll out at 7, with racing at 7:30. In addition to Late Models, weekly classes participating Saturday include USRA Modifieds, USRA B-Modifieds, and Factory Stocks. Find out more by visiting www.lucasoilspeedway.com.
