WHEATLAND, MO. (Sept. 14, 2023) – Oklahoma teen Ryan Timms earned a wire-to-wire victory in the ASCS Sprint Car portion on Night One of the 13th annual Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Meanwhile, Indiana driver Isaac Chapple captured the POWRi WAR Sprint main event as the three-night crown jewel open-wheel event got underway.
The Hockett-McMillin Memorial recognizes the legacy of Jesse Hockett, from Warsaw, Mo., who was a star in both the winged and non-wing sprint divisions when he lost his life in a shop accident in 2010. His cousin and crew chief, Daniel McMillin, was killed in an automobile accident in 2006.
Timms started on the pole and set the early pace with Blake Hahn giving chase in second and Jamie Ball in third. By lap five, the leader already had a 1.2-second lead and expanded that to 1.4 as he caught lapped traffic by lap 10.
That’s when a caution slowed the action for Chris Martin’s spin in turn four. After the restart, Timms moved to the high groove to open up a 1.1-second lead and, with a clear track in front of him, gradually built on the margin.
Timms was 2.2 seconds in front by lap 17, but once he caught lapped traffic it allowed Hahn to cut into the gap. The difference was one second by lap 20, but Timms had the checkers in sight when three cars tangled in turn four on the white-flag lap to bring out a caution.
The 17-year-old from Oklahoma City was up to the challenge of a green-white-checkered finish, holding off Hahn to become the ASCS Series’ 16th winner of the season. He finished 1.2 seconds clear of Hahn, of Sapulpa, Okla., with Ball in third, Derek Hagar fourth after starting 10th and Garet Williamson fifth.
“There at the beginning, I didn’t really think it going to lay rubber,” Timms said of the surface. “I thought I was going to be right around the bottom and didn’t think it was gonna go away. I could hear Blake above me, three or four yellows in, so I figured it was time to move up there.
“When I got up there I started smelling rubber and I was kind of free, so I trunked the wing. It was really good, then I started getting really tight so I switched it back forward and we were able to put it in victory lane.
“This gives me a lot of confidence going into Saturday night. It’s really cool to win a Jesse Hockett prelim night with how much this race means to everyone, and me. Hopefully we can do the same Saturday.”
Hahn, a former Hockett-McMillin final-night winner, said it was a solid run for him but not good enough to track down Timms.
“Ryan did a really good job there and had a really good car,” Hahn said. “We made some good moves toward the end of the race when the track started getting one lane. To be able to start the weekend like this is a good start. Hopefully we can be one step better on Saturday.”
Williamson set fast qualifying time of 13.549 seconds, a track record for the ASCS Series. Williamson also set an overall Lucas Oil Speedway track record last month in a POWRi 410 Sprint show at the speedway with a time of 12.998. He went on to win the feature that night.
Chapple roars to POWRi WAR win: Isaac Chapple of Willow Branch, Ind., took over the lead on lap four and went on to win the POWRi WAR Sprint feature and $2,000. It was Chappel’s first POWRi win.
“It’s special,” Chapple said of winning a feature in an event named in memory of Hockett. “We’ve had this one circled all year. We watched Jesse Hockett when I was a little kid.”
Mario Clouser moved from fourth at the start into the lead on lap one, edging in front of pole-starting Burks by a few feet at the start-finish line. Clouser held the top spot until lap four when Chapple, who began fifth, took the lead coming off turn four.
Following a lap-five caution, Chapple and Clouser separated from third-place Rylan Gray by just over a second. Gray would work his way into the mix by lap 15, along with Casey Shuman and Ricky Lewis in fourth and fifth.
Chapple soon opened his biggest lead of the race, nearly a second over Clouser by lap 18. He took it to the finish from there, beating a late-charging Clouser by .487 seconds at the finish.
“I watched them rework the track and it really looked like the bottom was gonna be the place to be,” Chapple said. “We were a little snug early. It was a bit of a handful just to keep the wheels down. Luckily I was the first guy to kind of find it down there and shoot to the lead before too many other guys did.
“I started slowing down at the end. I was struggling to catch the lappers and it looked like Mario pulled beside me with about two to go. Luckily I just slowed down a little bit and did what I needed to do the last lap.”
Gray finished third with Burks fourth and Shuman fifth.
Action continues Friday night: The ASCS Sprints again run for $3,000-to-win on Friday night with the WAR Springs chasing $2,000-to-win. Drivers earn points each time they hit the track Thursday and Friday nights to help determine their starting position for the final night.
The finales on Saturday night, following last-chance qualifiers and B-Mains will be $10,000 for the ASCS winner and $4,077 for the WAR first-place finisher.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. with grandstands at 5, hot laps at 6 and racing at 7:05 on Friday. For the final day on Saturday, pit gates open at 3 and grandstands at 4 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6:35.
