ChiliBowl2014Inside Line Promotions – GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Jan. 11, 2015) – Sammy Swindell made headlines last summer when he retired as a full-time racer.

The legend returns to the cockpit this week for the first time in five months when he competes in the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Swindell will race on Tuesday in the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions – a $2,500-to-win event – prior to his Chili Bowl preliminary night Wednesday.

“We haven’t really touched the cars in five years and we really don’t need to,” he said. “Last year we were ok, just the circumstances didn’t work out for us.”

Swindell, who owns an event-leading five Chili Bowl feature wins, has taken advantage of his extra free time since his last race – the Knoxville Nationals last August.

“It gave me an opportunity to do some things I wouldn’t have had time to do,” he said. “Some little tweaks here and there. I think everything I did will be a positive. I don’t know if it will make us much faster, but it should be easier to drive. It’s so small here it takes a lot to make a little difference.”

His track record at the event also doesn’t hurt.

“It’s definitely good for your confidence knowing that you can come in here and you’re going to have one of the better cars,” he said. “But you get so many track conditions you have to pay attention to that and be ready for that. If I can win here that’s definitely more rewarding since I’m not doing anything right now.”

“John Christner has been huge,” Swindell said. “If it hadn’t been for him coming along we wouldn’t be able to do much of this at all. He’s been a great supporter for us and he’s been a great friend. It was nice of him to do all the things he’s done for us and continues to do for us.”

Swindell would also like to thank Freightliner of Tulsa, Spike, Esslinger and all of the various sponsors for their continued support.
