Stormy Scott

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (July 26) — Stormy Scott slipped by Jason Krohn late in the race and won the 35-lap feature Friday night at the Deer Creek Speedway during the final night of qualifying for 3rd Annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Bauer Built Tire and Hanson Tire Service.

Krohn was quickest out of the gate, charging out to a six-car-length lead in the first two laps from his pole position while Scott, who started on his outside, gave chase.

Flying around the high side of the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval, the 2007 USMTS national champion was on cruise control for the first half of the race. Meanwhile, Scott continued to run the shortest line around the track and was able to keep Krohn in his sights.

By lap 20, Scott’s began to reel in Krohn and he won the drag-race to the flagstand to lead the 24th lap. The race’s final caution with right laps to go gave Krohn another shot at the 2012 USMTS rookie of the year, but Scott was flawless over the final few circuits and sailed into the winners circle.

After qualifying earlier in the day during the rain-delayed Thursday program, Scott decided to use his mulligan and try again during the Friday night program, which kicked off around 9 p.m. and wrapped up two minutes before midnight.

The move paid off as the 23-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., recorded a perfect score by setting quick time in his qualifying group, and then winning his heat race and the main event. He’ll go from the pole position in Saturday’s 100-lap finale where the winner will walk away with at least $20,000 and each of the 31 starters will go home with no less than $1,500.

It was the first day for Scott in a new GRT Chassis since joining the Canada-based Eagle Motorsports team last week.

Krohn’s efforts earned him the starting spot next Scott Saturday in the middle of row 1 while Terry Phillips, who won the main event four hours earlier in the first program of the day, will take the green flag from the outside of the front row.

Tommy Myer finished third in Friday’s nightcap with Jordan Grabouski coming home fourth ahead of defending WMDTC winner and two-time defending USMTS national champ Ryan Gustin and sixth-place finisher Craig Thatcher.

Arbor Masters Central Region champion Jeremy Payne ended a rough day with a thrilling run in the main event. After needing a provisional starting spot to get into the feature, he stormed from 27th on the grid to seventh at the checkered flag.

Brad Waits, who won the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship two years ago, earned an eighth-place finish with Chris Brown nabbing the ninth position and Thomas Tillison Jr. taking tenth.

Points were awarded for qualifying, heat races and the main events, with the top 6 in overall points earning a spot in one of the first 18 starting slots for Saturday’s championship race. The first program began at 5:30 and finished up by 8:00. Track crews immediately took to the racing surface after the checkered flag to get ready for another complete show for the regularly-scheduled Friday night program featuring another batch of time trials, heat races, last-chance races and another 35-lap main event.

Saturday’s show will feature an “alphabet soup” of main events beginning with an “E” Main as drivers try to make their way into the big dance.
