Donnellson, IA (Friday, May 12, 2023) –  Round two of the Iowa Corn Growers Association IMCA Late Model “Drive For 5”, presented by Floyd’s Waste Systems, JJ Nichting Company Case IH Company, Ideal Ready Mix, Triple 777 Trucking, Woodworth Attorney at Law, Triple R Performance Engines, B&B Propane, Budweiser, Conrad Trucking, Donnellson Tire & Service, KQ92, and Big Country 103.1 took place on Friday, May 12th at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. Despite mother nature’s attempt, which seems to be the norm for 2023, the track prep crew had the 3/8th’s mile track ready for action. At the end of the night four driver’s claimed multiple wins on the season at the track, while two other driver’s scored their first wins of the season.

Up first was the 18 lap Roberts Tire Center IMCA Northern SportMod feature, with Jim Gillenwater and Brandt Ames leading the field to green. Gillenwater took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Matt Tucker and Brandon Dale. While Gillenwater paced the field out front, seventh place starter Sean Wyett was working his way towards the front. On lap 6 Wyett overtook Dale for the runner up spot, and then went to work on Gillenwater for the top spot. Coming off turn 2 to get the checkered flag, Wyett got under Gillenwater, as the two raced side-by-side down the backstretch. Wyett would edge out Gillenwater at the line to claim his first win of the season at the track. John Oliver Jr. came from 9th to finish 3rd, Dale was 4th, with Brayton Carter coming from 10th to finish 5th.

CJ Horn and Jeff Guengerich drew the front row for the 25 lap Iowa Corn Growers Association “Drive For 5” IMCA Late Model qualifying feature, with Horn jumping out into the lead on lap 1 over Guengerich and Jeremy Pundt. While Horn started to pull away, Denny Woodworth, Dalton Simonsen, who started 8th, Jay Johnson, who started 9th, and Tommy Elston battled Guengerich and Pundt for the top seven spots. Despite heavy lapped traffic late in the race, Horn would go on to claim his second win in a row at the track, with this one worth $1,000. Woodworth won the battle for 2nd, Simonsen was 3rd, Elston was 4th, with Johnson coming home in 5th.

The 15 lap Sonny’s Super Market Sport Compact feature was up next, with Josh Barnes and Ryan Moore making up the front row. Josh Barnes moved out front on lap 1 over Noah Kayser and Kimberly Abbott. With Josh Barnes out front, son Chevy Barnes, who started 9th, moved into the runner up spot on lap 4, and then went to work on dad for the top spot. Coming off turn 2 to complete lap 12, Chevy Barnes got under Josh Barnes to grab the lead. Chevy Barnes then held off Josh Barnes in a caution free race to claim his second win in a row at the Lee County Speedway. Jack Pflum, from Cincinnati, Ohio, finished 3rd after starting in 10th, Abbott was 4th, with Chandler Fullenkamp completing the top 5.

Jerad Fuller and Fisher Reese led the field to green in the 18 lap J&J AG Auto and Truck IMCA Modified feature. But it was third place starter Jadin Fuller who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Jerad Fuller and Bill Roberts Jr. While Jadin Fuller set the pace, Roberts Jr. was working to hold off Austen Becerra, who started 7th, for the runner up spot. Becerra made the pass of Roberts Jr. on lap 7, and then went to work on Jadin Fuller for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 to complete lap 11, Becerra slipped under Jadin Fuller for the lead. Becerra then went on to score his second win in a row at the track. Jadin Fuller was 2nd, Denny Eckrich came from 8th to finish 3rd, Mark Burgtorf was 4th, with Oregon racer Grey Ferrando finishing 5th after starting in 10th.

Up next was the 18 lap Donnellson Tire & Service IMCA Stock Car feature, with Jerry Jansen and Peter Stodgel on the front row. Jansen would edge out John Oliver Jr. at the line to lead lap 1, only to lose the top spot to Oliver Jr. the next lap. Oliver Jr. paced the field out front, while Derrick Agee, who started 9th, was trying to work his way to the front. On lap 5 Agee was able to take over the runner up spot from Jeremy Pundt. But without a caution to bunch the field up, Agee wasn’t able to mount a challenge on Oliver Jr. As Oliver Jr. went on to claim his first win of the season at the Lee County Speedway. Pundt was 3rd, Josh Foster was 4th, with Beau Taylor coming home in 5th.

The final feature to take to the track was the 12 lap Mini Hauler Trucks, with Jeff Bockes and Ryan Barton drawing the front row. But just as the green flag was waved, the red light would come on before lap 1 was scored. As Sheldon Brockett rolled off turn 4 and collected Matt Barton to bring out the red. Sheldon Brockett would climb from his truck okay. On the original restart Ryan Barton moved out front to lead lap 1 over Bockes and Roger Brockett. Ryan Barton would hold the top spot until lap 6, when Tim Wagner got under him to take over the lead. Wagner then held off Roger Brockett to claim his second win of the season at the track. Ryan Barton was 3rd, Bockes was 4th, with Don Wood completing the top 5.
