After a month of silence, the American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports was back in action Saturday as the Boothill Speedway welcomed the thundering herd of high-horsepower machines to the 3/8-mile dirt oval in Greenwood, La.

Sean Gaddis nipped polesitter Chase Wascom at the flagstand to lead the opening lap, but his time at the top was short-lived as fifth-starting Kale Westover blasted into the lead the next time around.

Westover proceeded to run away from the field but charging ahead behind him was Chris Henigan, who started the 30-lap feature race next to Westover in the third row.

Henigan was closing on Westover as the they reached lapped traffic, but the yellow flag appeared with ten laps to go and slowed the pace, giving the lead duo a clear track ahead.

Sensing his moment, Henigan dove deep into the turn three and slid up the banking to block the leader’s line, but Westover crossed back underneath the master from Marshall, Texas, to regain the lead with three laps to go.

Henigan continued to search for a way around Westover, and then scooted to the bottom in the final corner but Westover won the drag race to the checkered flag to score a $2,000 victory and his first American Racer USRA Modified Series score of 2023.

“I heard him out there and that’s when I knew to start worrying,” the driver from Altus, Okla., revealed. “I could hear him and I knew it was going to be tough but you know Chris knows his place probably ten times better than I do and I just started having to go to protect mode and I probably started screwing up more going into protect mode trying to cover him than actually trying to hit my marks.

“I’m glad, it’s good. You know me and Chris have been racing for a long time, He usually gets the better of me, so it’s good to finally get the better of him one time.

Henigan settled for the runner-up paycheck with Jason Ingalls knocking off nine competitors to finish third after starting 12th on the double-file grid.

“It’s a place that I’ve always wanted to win. It’s always a good a fan count here… I love this place and I’m glad to see what Bubba Jones and these guys have done to it.”

Gaddis held on for a fourth-place finish with Lee Patton completing the top five.

Meanwhile, Joe Duvall remains the series points leader. A spin by ‘Big Daddy’ on the second lap brough about a caution, but he bounced back to garner a respectable sixth-place finish.

The rest of the top ten finishers were Kenny Gaddis, James McCreery, Chad Melton and Morgan Bagley, who earned the Dickson Transport Hard Charger Award after passing 11 cars.

With 11 shows in the books and six nights of racing left to go, the ARMS motorheads will compete in a four-night Labor Day clash next weekend.

Action kicks off at the former Superbowl Speedway as the series ends the eighth month on Thursday, Aug. 31, with a trip to the Hunt County Speedway in Greenville, Texas.

Friday, Sept. 1, will find the gods of gas going fast at the ultra-popular 67 Speedway in Texarkana, Ark., and then it’s off to Kevin Sustaire’s Rocket Raceway Park in Petty, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 2, for the 9th Annual Bryan Mize Memorial which pays $9,000 to the winner.

The quadrupleheader wraps up Sunday Sept. 3, at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway presented by Genuine RV in Vivian, La.

The season finale happens Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28, at the Rocket Raceway Park for the ARMS Nationals.

Each of the events will award a minimum of $2,000 to win. All events also award Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points in the USRA Modified division.
