Jeremy Camp taking on challenges of new car, new motor on unfamiliar track in POWRi 600cc Micros at Kokomo Grand Prix

POWRiKOKOMO, Ind. (April 11, 2013)—Jeremy Camp of Blue Mound, Ill., will bring a new chassis and engine to an unfamiliar track Saturday and Sunday to race in the Kokomo Grand Prix, the opening events of the season for POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series.

It’s a tall order to put all those pieces together, but Camp relishes the challenge he’ll face at one-third mile Kokomo Speedway. He and car owner Chad Bartosik of Decatur, Ill., have switched to a Sawyer chassis and an OSR-built Yamaha for their third season together

“I think it will be fun with a new car, motor and fuel injection system,” Camp said. “I’ve never seen the track, but I think it’s similar to some of the other tracks we’ve run and we get to run against a lot of Indiana drivers we don’t normally get to run with.”

Camp is one of the most successful drivers in the POWRi Outlaw Micro Series, which begins its ninth season. He was the champion in 2010 and has 10 career victories, fourth on the all-time list behind Dereck King (20), Andrew Felker (14) and Kevin Bayer (12). Camp finished second in the championship last year with one win included among 10 top-fives in 14 features.

“We were pretty happy with the season,” Camp said. “We’re looking to improve on it some more this season. We’d like to run the whole season if we can, but we’re going to evaluate it after the first six races and see how we’re doing. It always comes down to finances and it’s hard to get away from work for the Friday night races.

“A second championship would definitely be pretty exciting. Dereck King has three and nobody else has more than one. It’s definitely the best Micro series in the country. You can not go to any track and have the competition we have in POWRi. There are 15 drivers in every event that have won features.”

The Kokomo Grand Prix features the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the USAC Mopar National Dirt Midgets in a co-sanctioned event with a 30-lap feature on Saturday that pays $4,000 to win and a 40-lap feature on Sunday with $6,000 to win. USAC’s Ignite Midgets also are on the program Saturday and Sunday. The event was postponed from Friday because of rain and cold. Saturday’s original schedule, with pit gates open at 2 p.m., grandstands at 4 and racing at 7 p.m., is intact, but organizers are considering moving Sunday’s event into the afternoon.
