DIRTcar Summer Nationals     Haubstadt, IN – July 7, 2013 –  Shannon Babb, of Moweaqua, IL, picked up win number four on the 2013 UMP Summernationals tour in winning the late model feature Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway.  Babb led throughout.  He used a high line around the speedway which proved to be the fastest and turned in a flawless performance.

Babb was elated in victory lane.  “The track was excellent.  And the front row outside starting spot was hard to beat tonight.  The competition is making me have to step up our program a little bit!  I knew Bobby would make a run for it right at the end.”

Babb’s SBR Team race car is sponsored by Petroff Towing, Donley Trucking, All Star Performance, and PRC.  Babb is a three time Summer National Champion.  He has won the Tri-State Summernationals event 4 times in his career.

Babb left very few opportunities for runner-up Bobby Pierce to get underneath or by him.  Pierce stayed in contention and was diving into the turns.  It remained a two car race for the $5,000 top prize.  Tanner English was resistant as the top of the order filled up with former winners.  English finished third in the 40 lap event.  Summernationals points leader Brandon Sheppard moved up to challenge for the final podium spot but would finish fourth this time.  Ryan Unzicker was fifth.

Dennis Erb Jr. finished sixth and provided the competition that kept the field around him bunched as they tried to move up and finish in the top five.  Erb had started twelfth in the 22 car field.  NASCAR’s Austin Dillon was eighth, finishing just behind Randy “King Kong” Korte.

Jason Riggs, Shannon Babb, and Bobby Pierce took the three late model heat races.

Michael Chilton won the consolation.  However in the feature Chilton was involved in an accident in turn four and his car left the track on the hook.  Despite the pace and a few yellow flags, 14 of the 22 starters completed the run.

Mike Harrison of Highland, IL, won the Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals.  He pursued leader Larry Anderson lap after lap until Anderson bobbled in turn four.  It was just an instant, but that is all Harrison needed and he captured the lead.  Levi Kissinger then worked the inside to take second before the checkered flag flew.

Anderson finished third in the 25 lap event.  Modified fast qualifier Kent Robinson was fourth.  Robinson was in the unique position to have been the fastest qualifier in the late models also.

But that car failed as he was leading the first late model heat race.

Nick Hoffman finished fifth.

A 48 car field required 6 heat races, 2 C Mains, and 2 B Mains to set the feature field.  The purse was for $1,000 to win.  Anderson, Tyler Nicely, Kissinger, Harrison, Robinson, and Steven Schnapf won the heat races.  Zach Fair and Devin Gilpin won the B Mains to advance to the feature.  Robbie Eilers and Chad Boone took the C Mains.  NASCAR competitor Kenny Wallace was sixth in the feature.

The next race at Tri-State Speedway is set for July 20th.  The event will be the finale for USAC Indiana Sprint Week.  The sprint car feature will pay $5,000 to win and the program will include the UMP Modifieds.
